But Some are Useful


This chart illustrates part of the idea - individual creatures are represented by dots, with each of the axes represent some characteristic (height, weight, furriness, arm length, whatever) (in reality, there would be dozens of axes, but two are all that's convenient to show). Here we have one species with three "clumpings" - but if these clumpings diverge over time, three new species could arise.
