So when you see the equations that are commonly used to describe how linear or angular momentum changes with force or torque, remember that they are really describing how momentum is transferred from one part of a larger system to another; it may be useful to consider only one part of a system, but there are situations for which dealing with the whole system (and therefore with transfers of momentum, not changes) is vital.
